A clicker is used during training to mark the behavior that you are working on. When you are trying to teach your dog to walk on a loose leash -- by the time you say "good dog" your dogs has done lots of different things and they are unsure which one won them the reward. When you click at the point that your dog does the exact behavior that you want -- then they know what it is you are asking of them. It really works!

When Norman found us he did not know how to sit or lie down on command. I had him doing both within 10 minutes. Now he does them with or without verbal cues, and I no longer have to click. One day I was working on "go-to-your-place" with Betsy and he started running to her place (it did not make her happy because she was trying to be very independent that day) -- of course HE got a treat. Now when I tell him to go -- he runs over, and lies down to wait for his treat.
